For this extra credit opportunity you are to choose two of the films depicting United States History from the pre-Columbian Era to 1877 on the following list and critique each films in two separate papers based on knowledge you have obtained through course readings, lecture notes/outlines, and other supplementary materials. Most of these films are considered to be classic films. Each portrays the United States in a particular fashion and all have contributed at some level to an iconic perception of American culture and history. Since this list obviously cannot include every film made about this period, if there is another film you’d rather use for your critique, please let me know.
Begin your critique with a summary of the film that should be no longer than one pages in length. This summary should be succinct, yet comprehensive enough that anyone reading the summary will have a clear idea of what the movie is about. Your summary should include the title of the movie, the director of the movie, the major stars of the movie, the year the movie was released, and the plot of the movie.
Your analysis of the film should address issues such as its strengths and weaknesses, what you believe to be the message of the film, and whether the film’s depiction of the United States and its culture is accurate. Of particular importance is an evaluation of how the movie reflects the context of the time in which it was produced. You must provide examples from the course readings/lectures/discussions that substantiate your opinion of the film’s accuracy and cite your sources parenthetically (i.e. Foner, 203). Use this to reference course readings: Give Me Liberty!, Brief Fifth Edition – Vol. 1 Eric Foner.
Each film critique should be a minimum of three (3) FULL pages in length, typed in 12-point font, double- spaced, with reasonable margins. Since you will be submitting your film critique automatically goes through SafeAssign, be sure that the words you use are your own.
