TITLE: CM2302 coursework
This coursework is worth 25% of the total marks available for this module. The
penalty for late or non-submission is an award of zero marks. You are
reminded of the need

INSTRUCTIONS
You can chose ONE of two possible courseworks for CM2302 over the
Autumn semester: (i) write an essay (up to 3000 words); (ii) answer questions
on a case study (there are three questions in total in the case study).
Guidance for each of these is provided below.

Case Study
CM2302 Assignment – Autumn
Francis and Frances (F&F) are providing a networking consultancy and a hosting
service for local companies in Cardiff. Their business plan considers three possible
services for clients:
A networking solution that enables the set up of local area networks within
Small to Medium scale Enterprises (SMEs).

A hosting and development service for enabling companies to have a Web
presence.

A hosting service for storing data backup for companies or individuals –
providing different price plans for customers depending on the overall storage
required, and the frequency of backup required.
They have purchased hosting space from a data centre operated by BT at Cardiff Bay,
which includes 10 high capacity servers with 10TB of disk storage each. They have
set up their own mail and Web servers on these machines and provide Web design
and hosting solutions to their customers. F&F deal with companies that require
catalogues to be made available on-line, and also provide a secure payment system. In
addition they would also like to provide services to large companies that have
multiple offices in different parts of the UK.
1. Identify the types of network architectures that could be utilized by F&F for
establishing a local area network within an SME with 5 employees based at
the SME head office and 2 mobile sales people. Your answer should discuss:
(i) the types of components that would be needed for establishing the network;
(ii) reliability issues with each of these components; (iii) connectivity between
the SME network and the services being offered by F&F.

2. Describe the types of mail protocols that F&F would need to support on their
server. Briefly describe two mechanisms that F&F could provide to secure the
electronic mail exchange between employees of companies that they deal with.
You should also comment on how easy it would be to set up these mechanisms.

3. If F&F wanted to obtain hosting space from a different company – such as
Amazon.com or Virgin Media – what aspects would they need to consider?
Your answer should describe the key features that the hosting solutions
company would need to provide (other than cost).

Marking Guide:
You are required to consider the particular requirements outlined in the case
study. You should not use more than 2 A4 pages per answer (font size of 12
points). You will be awarded marks for:
i. The overall coverage provided in your answer. Marks will be awarded if
you can demonstrate that you have clear understanding of the question
being asked, and whether you have been able to address the
requirements that have been outlined in the question.
ii. The accuracy of your answer – i.e. whether you have been able to
specify use of the correct protocol/approach in the context of the
question being asked. It is therefore necessary that you demonstrate
clearly in your answer that you have understood the context of using a
particular protocol (clearly identifying where the protocol is useful and
where it is not).
Please consider the following when developing your solution:
The accuracy and correctness of the proposed solution. You should defend
your design choices.
The novelty of your proposed solution.
Choice of particular components – with data specification about these
components.
Discussion of limitations (or assumptions made) when deploying the approach
in practice.
Other considerations that would be of relevance (such as ease of modification
for future changes/growth). All references should be provided at the back of
the answers – and reference numbers should be quoted in the text when they
are being referred to.
To achieve a good mark, it is important that you consider:
Whether the answer being provided is a coherent piece of work that clearly
relates to the problem being described.
Whether the design approach adopted in the case study has been clearly
explained and defended using suitable data from network component vendors
.

Question 1 You are required to identify network
topologies relevant to the case study.
Do not provide a general coverage that
is not relevant to the question, such as
describing bus, ring and star
topologies, for instance.

 

You should also explain the types of
components required in the context of
the case study, and should not provide
a general coverage of network
components – such as routers, bridges,
etc.
Marks will be awarded if you can be
identify specific components (i.e.
CISCO Router X, etc), and explain
why it would be useful in the context
of the case study. You should provide a
URL to documentation of these
components.
Marks will be awarded if you are able
to provide a cost of the overall solution
you suggest, based on commercial
availability of the components that you
have identified. It would be useful if
you are able to relate cost to the overall
reliability of the solution you propose.
Question 2 Marks will be awarded if you are able
to describe protocols that are used
between a client application and the
mail servers, and those that operate
between mail servers.
You should fully explain any acronym
you use, and relate it to the
requirements of the case study.
Question 3 Marks will be awarded for explaining
each of the issues you identify as being
relevant. Do not just list the issue, but
also explain them briefly.
Marks will be awarded for relevance of
your answer to the case study.
You should not consider cost related
issues in your answer. You will not be
awarded any marks for this.

Essay
CM2302 Assignment — Autumn
You are required to write an essay about the role of network management in
industry, government or society. Suggested topics include:
What should be the role of government and private companies when
regulating network access and usage?
Who should pay for networks: government, individuals or companies?
Who should own the Local Loop?
What are the social and business barriers to establishing wireless networks in
metropolitan areas.
Should network usage be monitored by government to support national
defence?
Should network usage be logged?
These are only some suggested topics. I am also interested in hearing from you about
your topic ideas, and perhaps other themes that interest you. Please email me or talk
to me at the end of a lecture.
You should not attempt to provide a general coverage – but focus on one specific
theme/argument, and try to defend this in your essay. Use data sources to support your
arguments.
Marking Guide:
Your case study should be a maximum of 3000 words in length. Please use a 12pt
font size. You will be awarded marks for:
i. Your essay should focus on one specific theme – and not attempt to
provide a general coverage of networks or their benefits to business. Do
not repeat material that has already been covered in the lecture notes.
ii. Your essay should attempt to defend a particular point of view – for
instance, “Governments should pay for networks”, or “individuals
should pay for networks”, and not attempt to provide coverage of all
possible views in the context of a particular topic.

Please consider the following when developing your solution:
The accuracy and correctness of the proposed solution. You should defend
your arguments clearly.
The novelty of your proposed solution.
Use figures, only where necessary, to support your argument. You must
reference your figure sources. It is preferable for you to re-draw the figure
yourself.
Discussion of limitations (or assumptions made).
Other considerations that would be of relevance (such as ease of modification
for future changes/growth). All references should be provided at the back of
the answers – and reference numbers should be quoted in the text when they
are being referred to.
Avoid the use of marketing references where possible. You will be awarded
for your argument and the supporting material used to defend the argument.
To achieve a good mark, it is important that you consider:
Whether the essay is a coherent piece of work that clearly describes and
defends an argument.
Whether the essay relates a specific theme in networking to the underlying
protocols discussed in the lectures.
